Description: The Public Information Officer for the Colorado Department of Corrections (CDOC) directs the agency's statewide public outreach, media relations, and internal communications among the department's 20 correctional facilities, Adult Parole, and management/business support functions to ensure optimal collaboration among the CDOC stakeholders. This position is a full-time position based in Colorado Springs and reports to the Executive Director. Specific responsibilities of the Public Information Officer may include, but are not limited to: - Advise the executive and deputy director, senior departmental leadership and the Governor's Office on the public information/public relations impacts of policy and management decisions and significant corrections related incidents; - Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic communications program that supports the department's mission, goals, and objectives; - Develop tactical plans to meet objectives established at the highest management level, including establishing and communicating public information programs and processes; - Serve as the primary media relations coordinator and spokesperson for the CDOC. Responsible to develop and implement positive and proactive public relations strategies and partnerships. Respond to media inquiries and represent the CDOC to state and national media. Direct and/or conduct research needed to perform these functions. Manage crisis communications, including the development of emergency and strategic plans and protocols for such communications; - Partner with internal and external stakeholders to advance awareness of department services and achievements through promotions, media campaigns and other strategies; - Collaborate with public information officers at the facility level to establish department-wide implementation of communication standards and plans, oversee outreach activities and special events, and coordinate dissemination of accurate information released at the facility level; - Create press releases, speeches, fact sheets, talking points, articles for publication, memoranda, presentations, newsletters, brochures, letters and other materials to support internal and external communication goals and activities; - Plan and conduct press conferences and other media events and coverage opportunities, collaborating as needed with the Governor's Office and other partners within and outside of state government; - Develop and implement a comprehensive internal communications program that supports DOC employees in their work and engages them in the overall mission, goals and objectives of the department; - Develop and implement social media strategies to advance the department's goals and objectives; - Provide oversight to media platforms, ensuring professional, positive and proactive public relations are communicated; - Develop and implement social media strategies that are professional and engaging; - Perform other duties, as needed.
