(Berlin, N.H.) It was an exciting day at the Northern New Hampshire Correctional Facility (NCF) in Berlin where three students of the Berlin Granite State High School received high school diplomas. Corrections Commissioner Helen E. Hanks and NCF Warden Michelle Edmark presented diplomas to the graduates in a continuation of another ceremony that happened at the New Hampshire State Prison for Men in Concord on March 2, 2018.

“Obtaining a high school diploma is a significant accomplishment for each of these men and one that will play an important part in helping them establish a successful career path.” Commissioner Hanks said.

The Berlin Granite State High School is a fully functioning public high school that is operated within NHDOC correctional facilities through the Division of Community Corrections, Bureau of Programs. The program is operated through an interagency agreement between the Department of Corrections and the New Hampshire Department of Education. The NHDOC Education Department works with students to identify education needs and for those with prior education; they determine what additional credits are necessary to successfully complete the program. Our certified teachers then work with the students through traditional classroom instruction and activities to achieve the required coursework and skills demonstration to achieve their diploma.

The graduates expressed in personal statements to the audience regarding the feeling of accomplishment they have in completing high school these many years later. They focused on this being a stepping stone to other goals with one interested in technical programs as next steps and another targeting completion of their bachelor’s degree.

This graduation was truly just one step for these men in advancing themselves.
