South Dakota inmates make sensory items for schools

Sioux Falls, SD (KSFY) Pheasantland Industries is a division of the South Dakota Department of Corrections that provides inmates workforce development opportunities while making products for state agencies and non-profits.

This summer inmates at the South Dakota State Penitentiary started making products for the new school year, designed specifically to help students with sensory issues stay calm and focused in the classroom.

“It really started with a tour we had with a local school, the principal and vice principal came in and we were talking about some different items that they could use for their building,” Pheasantland Industries Director Stefany Bawek said.
