Cheyenne, – The Wyoming Department of Corrections has become one of only three prison systems in the United States to receive the American Correctional Association’s (ACA) Lucy Webb Hayes Award.
This award is presented to an agency that demonstrates a strong commitment to public safety by ensuring all areas of operations meet highly regarded and nationally recognized industry standards.
“Receiving the prestigious Lucy Webb Hayes award is a great honor for our department and state,” said WDOC Director Bob Lampert, who accepted the award in January, 2019 at the ACA’s semi-annual national conference in New Orleans. “This honor speaks volumes to the professionalism and dedication of our staff – correctional officers, wardens, field agents, teachers, support staff and many others. They are our most important resource.”
The Lucy Webb Hayes Award was established to recognize correctional agencies that have achieved 100% compliance with both ACA accreditation standards and Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) standards. ACA has a total of 525 standards (62 mandatory, 463 non-mandatory) and PREA encompasses 43 lead standards with 192 provisional requirements.
Facilities must comply with 100% of ACA mandatory standards and 90% of the non-mandatory standards to maintain accreditation status. Federal law requires 100% compliance with all 192 requirements within the PREA audit process.
The award is named for Lucy Webb Hayes (1831-1889). She was the wife of President Rutherford B. Hayes, who served as ACA’s first President at its founding in 1870. Following this, he became the 19th President of the United States from 1877 to 1881.
This is the second three-year term in which the WDOC has been fully accredited with ACA. In 2015 the department received a Commitment to Excellence Award, also known as the Golden Eagle Award, for their initial accreditation of all facilities and programs within its jurisdiction.
Achieving the Lucy Webb Hayes award is another example of why the WDOC is recognized as a benchmark correctional agency. The Wyoming Department of Corrections contributes to public safety by exercising reasonable, safe, secure and humane management, while actively providing offenders opportunities to become law-abiding citizens.
