ST. JOSEPH — The number of inmates at the Berrien County jail continues to fall, according to the sheriff’s department’s annual report for 2018.
The jail booked 6,730 inmates last year, with an average daily population of 354, according to the report presented to the Board of Commissioners on Thursday by Sheriff Paul Bailey.
That compares to 7,125 in 2015, with an average population of 370. Bailey said the jail saw as many as 9,000 inmates several years ago. The jail has a capacity of 341, along with those newly arrested and waiting on their initial court appearance. Of those booked, 3,507 were for misdemeanors and 3,046 were for felonies.
