The new program is aimed at keeping contraband from entering the prison through the letters and packages.
Personal mail for inmates at the Erie County Prison will no longer go directly to the correctional facility at 1618 Ash St.
The mail will instead go to a site in Missouri to be scanned and provided to inmates electronically.
The new system, which went into effect Monday, is part of an effort to keep contraband out of the prison, Warden Kevin Sutter said.
“By taking the physical aspect out of the mix, it enhances security and protects our staff and inmates alike,” Sutter said in an email. “We have intercepted contraband/drugs from inspecting the mail for years, some of these finds being very recent.”
