A 56-year-old inmate who fell ill and died within hours of being booked into the Vista jail ingested a large amount of plastic-wrapped methamphetamine before his death, investigators said Wednesday citing an autopsy investigation.
Joseph Castiglione “had only been in custody eight hours at the time he went into medical distress (and) he may have ingested it prior to his arrest,” San Diego County Sheriff’s Lt. Michael Blevins said in a statement.
Castiglione died Feb. 7, a few hours after being found in medical distress inside a cell at the Vista Detention Facility, authorities said. He’d been booked into jail early that morning on suspicion of possessing drugs and drug paraphernalia, and violating his parole.
