Oregon jail inmate accused of hiding lighter, setting uniform on fire while in cell

An Oregon inmate stripped off his jail uniform and set it on fire 15 minutes after guards locked him into a Springfield jail cell, police say.

Richard A. Rierson, 41, used a small lighter to start the fire, triggering a fire alarm at the Springfield Municipal Jail, according to Springfield Police Lt. Tom Rappé. The flames spread to a nearby mattress before staff extinguished the fire.

Rappé said it’s not yet clear where Rierson hid the lighter. He said the inmate was strip-searched before being left alone in the cell.
