MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — Staffing has been a major issue for the Alabama of Department of Corrections over the years.
To learn more about how ADOC is preparing the next generation of corrections officers, CBS 42 had the opportunity to go inside ADOC’s training academy, where 70 cadets are expected to graduate Thursday. Stephanie Dearen is looking to start a new career inside Alabama’s prisons.
“I really think I am going to enjoy the job and be able to make a difference, not just as a public trust, but with the rehabilitation of inmates,” Dearen said.
The correctional officer training is a twelve-week course where cadets learn how to shoot a gun, protect themselves and potentially make a different in the lives they are overseeing.
