| Jail inmate who petitioned court for mental health treatment to go to contracted private facility |

A woman who said she was denied court-ordered mental health treatment at the Human Services Center has been admitted to a private facility after the only state-run psychiatric hospital said it’s understaffed and at capacity. Jessica Melissa Steele, who petitioned the court in August for a bed at the Human Services Center in Yankton, will receive treatment for competency restoration at a hospital in Sioux Falls with which HSC has a contract, her attorney Mark Kadi said. She has been in custody at the Minnehaha County Jail awaiting treatment. Steele filed the writ of mandamus in August asking the courts to have HSC admit her or find another facility that could treat her after HSC told her she would be put on a waiting list for court-ordered competency restoration treatment.
