An officer at a maximum-security prison in Michigan was jailed without bond Monday in the shooting deaths of two co-workers. Steven Edward Tierney, 41, was arraigned Sunday on two counts of open murder in the deaths of Sally Kay Paajanen, 34, and Craig Allen Fleck, 31. A neighbor found the victims' bodies about 2 p.m. Saturday outside Paajanen's home in Marquette County's Skandia Township, Undersheriff Jack Schneider said. Tierney was arrested that night at a relative's home in Humboldt Township, about 30 miles to the west. All three worked at the Alger Maximum Correctional Facility in Munising. Friends said Paajanen and Fleck had been dating for about a month. Authorities were trying to determine Tierney's relationship to the pair. 'We don't know if it was a one-sided emotional thing or an infatuation with her on his part,' Schneider told The Mining Journal of Marquette. According to investigators, Paajanen and Fleck had worked the 10 p.m.-6 a.m. shift at the prison and then drove to Paajanen's home in separate pickup trucks. Tierney, who had worked the 2 p.m.-10 p.m. shift on Friday, followed them in his vehicle and pulled in behind Paajanen's truck. The victims' bodies were found near one another and next to the trucks. Investigators began looking for Tierney after notifying officials at the Alger prison about the slayings, Schneider said. 'They said another officer had not shown up for his shift at 2, and we went from there,' the undersheriff said. 'I was just stunned when I heard. She was a dear, wonderful, loving person,' said Cheri Johnson, a friend of Paajanen's. 'I knew her about eight years and now she's gone. She loved people, and she loved her horses.' Fleck, Johnson said, 'seemed like a really nice guy. It was a new relationship, and (Paajanen) seemed really happy. God, I don't understand why this has to happen to people. It's just so crazy.' A preliminary examination for Tierney was scheduled for Feb. 25. |
