Lawmakers in Idaho have it right — dump private prisons |

Anyone who believes Idaho should do business with private prisons in the wake of the fiasco involving the Corrections Corporation of America and the administration of Idaho Gov. “Butch” Otter hasn’t been paying attention. U.S. Attorney Wendy Olson appears to let the governor off the hook by finding that CCA was not guilty of a criminal offense. But one wonders how to define it when the prison company bilked the state for unworked staff shifts and lacked the personnel to halt the practice of inmates preying on each other. Suffice it to say that Otter’s Board of Correction let CCA’s contract expire after securing a $1 million settlement from the company, an amount regarded as inadequate, and finally taking over management of the Idaho prison.
