| Ex-officer Sent to Prison for Having Sex with Inmate |

A 38-year-old Dayton, Ohio woman was sentenced March 27 to six months in prison for having sex with an inmate at Warren Correctional Institution while working there as an officer. Judge Neal Bronson also designated Norma J. Dunson a sexual offender and ordered her to pay the costs of her prosecution, despite pleas for leniency. Lawyer Anthony Vannoy urged Bronson to place Dunson on probation, in part by claiming Cletus Hines, an inmate serving 30 years in prison for robbery in Montgomery County, willingly engaged in sex with Dunson, as well as officers at Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe. Officials at Ross said they were unaware of the allegations, also made in a letter sent to Warren County prosecutors last year. 'We have no record of knowing anything about it. We've never had a case involving a staff member and an inmate,' said Michelle Finney, prison spokeswoman. Dunson and Hines had sex several times in a room next to the prison gymnasium from January 1999 until June 2000, when Hines was transferred to the prison in Chillicothe. She was indicted on charges of sexual battery in October 2002. Last month, Dunson pleaded guilty to attempted sexual battery in a plea bargain with prosecutors. On Thursday, Vannoy also pointed out that Dunson had no prior criminal record and had already suffered as a result of the case. Dunson resigned in April 2002. 'She has lost her home, her car, her well-being and her reputation,' Vannoy said in a memorandum filed Monday in Warren County Common Pleas Court. However, the judge and the prosecutor said Dunson's crime warranted a prison term because she had compromised the security of everyone at the prison. She is the third Warren Correctional Institution worker since 1991 convicted on charges involving sex with an inmate. |
