Description: | JOB DESCRIPTION: JUVENILE CORRECTIONS SUPERVISOR/LIEUTENANT OVERALL PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE The Corrections Supervisor is responsible to ensure the safety and security of juvenile detainees and staff during an assigned shift. Provide direct supervision to Juvenile Correction Officers and support services, leading, correcting, mediating and intervening to allow operations to run effectively. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES 1. Assumes command of the assigned shift. 2. Responsible for the supervision and coordination of all security functions and activities relating to the care and well being of detainees. 3. Recommends and provides input on subordinate personnel evaluations. 4. Maintains direct supervision of all Detention Center personnel assigned to his/her shift. 5. Relieves staff as necessary, provides back up in emergency or crisis situations. 6. Escorts residents inside the facility, as well as outside the facility. 7. Resolves conflict between detainees and employees. 8. Supervises detainee surveillance, movement, medical, dietary, court and safety needs. 9. Ensures detention resident adherence to rules and procedures. 10. Recommends employee disciplinary action. 11. Conducts and records shift briefing minutes. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS To meet employment eligibility requirements for appointment as a Juvenile Corrections Supervisor, a person must (1) Meet all eligibility requirement of a Juvenile Corrections Officer (2) Have two (2) years of experience supervising or counseling youth comparable to a Juvenile Correctional Officer (3) Obtain and maintain certification in oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray (4) Skill in the use of restraining devices (5) Must demonstrate knowledge of proven leadership principles and traits. Any or all experience requirements may be waived by Superintendent if individual demonstrates exceptional knowledge of all security positions, policies and procedures, and exhibits a superior level of job performance. Preference may be given to applicants who have acquired a Bachelor's Degree conferred by a college or university accredited by an accrediting organization, or those who have served honorably in the U.S. military. CERTIFICATION: To be eligible for certification the applicant must meet eligibility requirements for appointment as a Juvenile Corrections Officer, shall not have disqualifying criminal history, must obtain current CPR certification, current First Aid certification, current physical restraint training/ certification, and forty (40) hours of in-house training that is approved by the Ohio Department of Youth Services and/or American Corrections Association within the first six months of employment. Should have attended, or be eligible to attend the 120 hour basic corrections academy. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES 1. Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing. 2. Knowledge of Federal and State regulations and Civil Service Laws. 3. Knowledge of counseling and case management skills. 4. Ability to recognize unusual or threatening conditions and take appropriate action to stabilize the situation. 5. Ability to review and critique programming to ensure quality and effectiveness. 6. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. 7. Knowledge of team concepts, group dynamics, institutional programming and principles of behavior management. 8. Have, or be willing to complete, the 120 hour basic corrections academy. 9. Supervisory experience and/or training preferred. 10. Valid Ohio Drivers License. 11. Successfully completed their probationary period of employment, if applicable. WORKING CONDITIONS This position should be prepared to deal with emotionally disturbed and/or violent children. You must also be aware of crisis prevention and be familiar with restraint. The threat to physically restrain violent youth, who could pose harm to themselves or others, exists at all times. Work involves an exposure to personal danger and psychological stress. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The following physical demands would exist in the every day duties of this position: Standing, walking, sitting, lifting and/or carrying up to 75 pounds, pushing and/or pulling in physical restraint; reaching to retain objects in high places; stooping and/or kneeling to search or check under chairs, tables, etc (for contraband); speaking and hearing in order to communicate with the juveniles; and sight in order to maintain security of the facility and juveniles. CONFIDENTIALITY This position has access to juvenile criminal records, social histories, school records, psychological evaluations, psychiatric evaluations, etc. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT The final applicant selected for this position may be required to submit to urinalysis prior to being hired to test for illegal drug use. The Detention Center will decline to extend a final offer of employment to any applicant with a verified positive test result. Applicant must also be able to pass a background check (criminal history).
