Description: The Kansas Department of Corrections (KDOC) is accepting applications for an unclassified Warden position at the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility. Larned, located in the “Heart of Kansas” is home to the Larned State Hospital, Larned Juvenile Correctional Facility, and Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility. Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility provides treatment and a more appropriate and therapeutic atmosphere for inmates who are determined to be mentally ill. This facility also houses a minimum custody living unit. LCMHF employees 187 personnel, with 133 of the staff dedicated to security functions. Approximately 40 medical/mental health, educational, and food service contract staff are also employed at the facility. The Warden has the overall responsibility for managing and directing the security, fiscal, human resources and physical plant programs of the Larned Correctional Mental Health Facility (LCMHF) and ensures that prescribed activities are implemented and carried out in accordance with specified objectives. Considerable latitude and independent judgment is granted to the Warden in discharging the duties and responsibilities of the position.

Required Minimum Qualifications:

A Bachelor’s Degree with major coursework in criminal justice, the social sciences, the behavioral sciences, or public administration, and five years of supervisory and administrative/manager level experience in the field of corrections.

Preferred Skills and/or Qualifications:

Five years of experience in adult correctional work. A Master’s Degree with major coursework in criminal justice, the social sciences, the behavioral sciences, or public administration.

Ability to:
  • Administer a multi-custody correctional institution; communicate effectively; and deal with employees, inmates and the public with diplomacy.
  • Develop, implement, interpret, and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of complex statutes, rules, regulations, as well as Departmental and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Think and act quickly during an emergency; to follow oral and written instructions; and to plan, assign, and direct the work of others.
  • Maintain discipline among inmates.
  • Communicate effectively, orally, and in writing.
  • Plan, organize, direct and evaluate staff.

Knowledge of:
  • Modern principles, practices, and methods of correctional administration and rehabilitation, and understanding of the factors that produce crime and the attitudes, problems and behavior of those under restraint.
  • Principles and concepts of learning and effective instruction.
  • Modern management principles and practices, particularly those related to fiscal controls and personnel.

Other Requirements:

Positions in this class require that at the time of appointment the selected candidate must take and pass a drug screening test approved by the Division of Personnel Services unless the incumbent is moving from one safety-sensitive position to another safety-sensitive position within the same agency performing substantially similar duties. Possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

Salary: $61,838.40 - $82,867.20 depending on experience, education and skill. Excellent benefit package. This position will become vacant December 10, 2010 and it is anticipated the position will be filled in January, 2011.
