Description: JOB DESCRIPTION: JUVENILE CORRECTION OFFICER

OVERALL PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE Employee functions under minimal supervision. Maintains safety for staff and detainees and ensures continuous security. Follows the established guidelines and procedures in regular daily tasks. Must be mature, patient, and show evidence of personal qualities of character and be able to use good judgment. Unusual problems or deviations from policy are referred to supervisor on duty and/or Assistant Superintendent, and/or Superintendent.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  1. Care, custody, and control of juveniles assigned to the Detention Center including guidance, crisis intervention and re-direction of juveniles in connection with their conduct, attitudes, and relationships as well as the ability to physically restrain a hostile detainee and overcome physical resistance.
  2. Must be able to lead and interact through participation in therapeutic, physical, athletic, and recreational activities with detainees.
  3. Prepare detailed reports (incident, observation, etc.) as required and submit to supervisors on a daily basis.
  4. Guide juvenile detainees to effectively channel behavior in a more positive manner using approved therapeutic approach, education, self-discipline, responsibility, and respect for authority, oneself, and the community, on a daily basis.
  5. Conduct physical fitness and/or teach detainees recreational activities, on a daily basis or as required.
  6. Provide disciplinary assistance to support services personnel in the event disruptive behavior is exhibited by a detainee, on a daily basis.
  7. Ensure compliance with program rules, expectations, policies and procedures, etc., on a daily basis.
  8. Admit, process, and conduct orientation with newly admitted juveniles to their assigned program; advising detainees as to the rules and as to the observance of discipline requirements, on a daily basis.
  9. Attendance of staff meetings as required.
  10. Able to react to change productively and handle other essential tasks as assigned.
  11. All other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

To meet employment eligibility requirements for appointment as a Juvenile Corrections Officer, a person must
  1. Be twenty-one years of age or older
  2. Be of good moral character (e.g., no disqualifying criminal history or violations of moral turpitude);
  3. Have obtained a high school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED);
  4. Have a valid Ohio (or similar) drivers license; and
  5. Have a good driving record,
  6. Have reliable transportation, and
  7. Have and maintain telephone service for on-call or emergency recalls.

Preference may be given to applicants who: have acquired a baccalaureate degree conferred by a college or university accredited by an accrediting organization; have one or more year(s) of experience in full-time corrections, or with a juvenile agency that deals with offenders, or emotionally disturbed and/or violent children; or those who have served honorably in the U.S. military.

CERTIFICATION: To be eligible for certification the applicant must meet eligibility requirements for appointment as a Juvenile Corrections Officer, shall not have disqualifying criminal history, must obtain current CPR certification, current First Aid certification, current physical restraint training/ certification, and forty (40) hours of in-house training that is approved by the Ohio Department of Youth Services and/or American Corrections Association within the first six months of employment. Staff should have attended, or be eligible to attend the 120 hour basic corrections academy.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  1. Must be reliable and motivated towards helping others; be mature, patient, and show evidence of personal qualities or character and empathy; be able to use good judgment, able to control temper, relate in a friendly manner and follow guidelines, policies, and procedures; and be able to work in close contact with juvenile detainees and must be able to work with emotionally disturbed, and/or violent children.
  2. Basic Typing Skills and a basic knowledge of computers.
  3. Ability to communicate fluently, both written and oral, in English.

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position should be prepared to deal with emotionally disturbed and/or violent children. You must also be aware of crisis prevention and be familiar with restraint. The threat to physically restrain violent youth, who could pose harm to themselves or others, exists at all times. Work involves an exposure to personal danger and psychological stress. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those and employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work in outside weather conditions exposed to wet, humid, or cold conditions. The employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. Work performed in both daylight and at night and may require transport of juveniles though areas of varying population densities and traffic congestion, and under a variety of unsafe road conditions caused by inclement weather.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The following physical demands would exist in the every day duties of this position: Standing, walking, sitting, lifting and/or carrying up to 75 pounds, pushing and/or pulling in physical restraint; reaching to retain objects in high places; stooping and/or kneeling to search or check under chairs, tables, etc (for contraband); speaking and hearing in order to communicate with the juveniles; and sight in order to maintain security of the facility and juveniles.

CONFIDENTIALITY

This position has access to juvenile criminal records, social histories, school records, psychological evaluations, psychiatric evaluations, etc.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

The final applicant selected for this position may be required to submit to urinalysis prior to being hired to test for illegal drug use. The Detention Center will decline to extend a final offer of employment to any applicant with a verified positive test result. Applicant must also be able to pass a background check (criminal history).
