GENERAL SUMMARY:
Implements the Sheriff’s Victim-Witness Assistance Program by providing crisis intervention counseling, court support, social services referrals, community education, and training; performs related duties as required. The position is located in the Ada County Sheriff's Office, Administrative Services Bureau.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Coordinates and provides assistance relating to support, guidance, and short-term crisis intervention counseling to survivors, victims and witnesses of domestic violence, sexual assault and other vulnerable victim crimes; may provide transportation of victims to appropriate housing or services;
- Coordinates program operations with other segments of the law enforcement/criminal justice system to ensure effectiveness of operations;
- Maintains liaisons with programs operated by other agencies to provide technical assistance and service coordination;
- Provides educational presentations to law enforcement, schools, and other criminal justice agencies and community organizations;
- Maintains statistical data relevant to the Victim-Witness Assistance Program;
- Administers the policy of the Prosecuting Attorney to keep the Victim-Witness Assistance Program functioning smoothly and effectively;
- Assists victims and witnesses in interviews by attorneys and law enforcement officials by providing psychological and emotional support;
- Works directly with the Restitution Administrator to insure that the Restitution and Victim-Witness Programs are coordinated; and
- Conducts interviews with victims and witnesses to establish that services are needed and which existing services are effectively delivered; and
- Performs related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, social work or a related field;
- At least three years’ experience in victim advocacy field and/or law enforcement preferred;
- Knowledge of the objectives of victim-witness programs;
- Knowledge of the processes involved in the Criminal Justice System;
- Knowledge of principles and practices of applied sociology and psychology;
- Knowledge of data collection practices;
- Knowledge of public relations contact techniques;
- Skill in crisis counseling and/or direct service delivery;
- Ability to understand and work within the goals and objectives of the Sheriff’s Office as they relate to this program and integrate them into viable work plans;
- Ability to work within the court system, social work values and ethical standards;
- Ability to obtain the cooperation of others;
- Ability to relate well with juveniles;
- Ability to maintain confidentiality;
- Ability to provide short-term crisis intervention counseling to victims;
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships;
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written direction;
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals of various social-economic levels;
- Ability to provide direct support to victims as needed.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
- Incumbents must appear before an oral board and complete a polygraph and background check prior to entrance on duty;
- This position is required to be on-call in order to perform the primary job responsibilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
- Work is performed in an office environment and in a field setting;
- The incumbent is required to assist clients in a variety of setting such as private homes and public places such as offices, hospitals, court and jails etc.;
- The incumbent is required to attend meetings, interview persons and otherwise conduct the normal business outside regular business hours.
