Job Classification: Deputy Sheriff (Corrections) - Entry Level and Lateral Candidates

The Linn County Sheriff's Office is currently recruiting for Deputy Sheriff (Corrections) for both Entry Level and Lateral transfer candidates. The Sheriff’s Office is building an ongoing eligibility list for current and future positions. All testing through National Testing Network (NTN) must be completed by October 28, 2016.

Salary Information: From $3,938 up to $4,959 per month (base salary)
Bilingual Pay: Employees who are fluent in Spanish (and possibly Russian and/or American Sign Language) and use these skills while on duty will receive an additional 5% per month after passing a Standardized
Language Fluency test administered by Linn County. Bilingual Pay is awarded at the discretion of the Sheriff.

  • Potential of up to 17% in additional pay for certification, education, bi-lingual and special assignments.
  • Linn County Sheriff’s Office Deputies are enrolled in a retirement plan through the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS), with county-pickup, along with 1% county-pickup deferred compensation plan
  • Shift overtime is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate of pay (can be re-directed to employee's deferred compensation plan too). Corrections staff work a rolling four-days on/four-days off 12-hour shift schedule, and rotate days/nights every two months.
  • Longevity pay of 2.5% on top of the base salary on 10th year anniversary, and an additional 2.5% on top of the base salary on 15th year anniversary
  • At the discretion of the Sheriff, and after successful testing of abilities, bilingual employees are eligible for 5% incentive pay on top of the base salary
  • All uniforms (including dry cleaning) and equipment provided. Yearly equipment allowance of $150.
  • Paid vacation, personal and sick time
  • Ability to accrue up to 60 hours in Comp Time

Necessary Certifications:
Be able to be certified as a corrections officer by the Department of Public Safety Standards and Training - DPSST Minimum Standards of Employment as a Law Enforcement Officer are located at www.oregon.gov/DPSST (Administrative Rule 259-008-0010).

Minimum requirements for both Entry Level and Lateral Candidates: Must meet the following State Department of Public Safety Standards and Training requirements:
  • United States Citizen within one year of employment
  • At least 21 years of age at the time of employment
  • Declared by a physician as able to perform the physical duties required by the occupation
  • Of good moral fitness, without legal conduct involving moral turpitude, dishonesty, fraud, deceit, misrepresentation, and conviction of drug and/or sex crimes.
  • Must successfully complete all required training standards established by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and/or DPSST within one date of hire.
Must meet the following Linn County Requirements:
  • Must possess a current driver’s license in the applicant’s state of residence and an acceptable driving history. Linn County will obtain a copy of the driving record for all qualified applicants from Driver and Motor Vehicle Services.
  • Possess knowledge of and experience in using a keyboard, mouse and computer (PC) equipment.
  • Positions in this class are required to work rotating shifts, split shifts or other alternative work schedules and may be subject to call back.
  • Finalists must pass psychological and medical/drug evaluations by a county appointed physician.
Tentative Hiring Process:
  1. Review of NTN testing scores (REACT & ORPAT). Applicants must achieve a passing score of 80% or higher on the video exam. Applicants must pass all sections of the testing.
  2. Review of NEOGOV Application
  3. Informal 10-15 minute face-to-face interview for eligible and invited applicants (followed by a short job tour).
  4. Formal oral board face-to-face interview for eligible and invited applicants.
  5. Pre-employment background investigation selected top candidates
  6. Conditional offer of employment extended to selected top candidates only. Hire contingent upon the successful completion of the following screening processes:
  7. Pre-employment psychological evaluation
  8. Pre-employment medical evaluation
  9. Pre-employment drug screening

Special Instructions: All candidates must complete the ORPAT and REACT tests for this position. ORPAT is scheduled separately from the NTN home page. You must schedule both a REACT and ORPAT test for this position. Testing for both REACT and ORPAT is available at the Brooklake campus of Chemeketa Community College.

(For Out-of-State Applicants): An application may be accepted without an ORPAT score. However, an ORPAT score with NTN is required to move forward in the hiring process.
