Description: Johnson County is seeking a dynamic individual committed to the success of those served by the Department of Corrections as its next Director. This position is a high profile position that requires a significant amount of interaction with other criminal justice system partners, advisory boards and other County departments/agencies.

Johnson County Department of Corrections, located at several locations throughout Johnson County, has 317 employees and a $31 million budget. The department is responsible for supervising juvenile and adult offenders through progressive, effective, and sound corrections, rehabilitation, and recidivism reduction programs. The Corrections department forges partnerships to bridge the gap between offenders and the community by encouraging client responsibility and behavioral change.
Special Instructions: Responsibilities:

Serves as the principal officer of the Corrections Department and sets the strategic direction for the department; represents the County on all corrections related issues to outside governmental units and the criminal justice system at the local, regional, state, and national levels; monitors the state and federal legislative process for significant changes; leads the implementation of positive, evidence-based changes in laws, programs, and practices within the department and County; testifies before the state legislature and speaks with legislators to lobby for appropriate changes; works with the Criminal Justice Coordinator and the Criminal Justice Advisory Council to initiate and implement new initiatives to improve offender success in the County; maintains oversight of the operations of the overall department and continually monitors performance within each division; works closely with the Human Resources Department regarding recruitment, selection and discipline of employees; manages departmental budget and expenditures and ensures the timely application for community program funds; facilitates the Community Corrections Advisory Board and the Juvenile Corrections Advisory Board; builds and maintains relationships with other County departments and community partners; leads the Corrections Department in the County’s initiative to become a higher performing organization.

Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in Corrections, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice or a related field. Fifteen years of progressively more responsible correctional management experience, preferably in the public sector, is required. Seven years of experience in the top administrative role in a correctional program is required. Master’s degree in Corrections, Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred. Five years of experience in a correctional facility is preferred.
