Jeremy Welch, from the Lansing Correctional Facility in Kansas, was named the 2008 Meritorious Service Award recipient by the American Correctional Officer, a U.S. organization supporting COs. Welch was selected from a pool of more than 70 nominees nationwide. He was recognized for helping LCF storekeeper Pam Bonner after an inmate attacked and severely injured her. Welch removed Bonner from the area and then helped subdue the inmate. "Behind the walls where we work, we only have our training, experience and each other to rely on. The brave actions of Officer Welch and his willingness to put his life on the line to protect fellow staff members is to be revered," said Vito Dagnello, American Correctional Officer president. Welch will be given the award this September at the 2008 American Correctional Officer’s Medal of Honor Awards. |
