IONE, CA - The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation is planning to close the Preston Youth Correctional Facility, a source has confirmed. An employee working at Preston contacted News10 to report a rumor that the facility would be closed, and that the official announcement would come at a staff meeting next Tuesday. The employee said the closure would affect 400 staff and 218 juvenile wards. A source at CDCR confirmed the rumor, but did not want to be identified discussing sensitive internal information. The source said the decision was the result of budget cuts combined with a declining population of youth offenders. A relatively recent shift in corrections policy places more juvenile offenders in county custody, the source said.
