‘Hardening’ Hays State Prison: State officials tout security upgrades and new inmate housing procedures as methods to decrease violence |

GEORGIA - TRION — A string of events at Hays State Prison dating back to December 2012 raised questions about safety procedures there. State Department of Corrections officials, however, said improvements have been made. After reports of violent incidents at the facility earlier in the year, Rome native and former Rome police officer Rick Jacobs was assigned as interim warden and put in charge to oversee a nearly $2 million “hardening” process. “As part of our hardening process, we looked at our people, we looked at our processes and we looked at our infrastructure,” Jacobs said, citing a comprehensive team effort as the biggest reason they were able to accomplish the upgrades.
