Scathing report on violence at Tutwiler prison has officials searching for solutions |

The scathing U.S. Department of Justice report on sexual abuse and harassment at Julia Tutwiler Prison for Women in Wetumpka has some state leaders searching for solutions and prison officials wondering if the DOJ has paid attention to the progress already made. The DOJ’s Special Litigation Section of the Human Rights Division released a 34-page report on Jan. 17 detailing what it called systemic problems at Tutwiler that have allowed its staff to continue to sexually abuse and harass inmates. This has occurred despite repeated notification from groups such as the nonprofit Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) legal firm, the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the DOJ’s National Institute of Corrections (NIC), according to the report. Despite the letter’s assertion that the Alabama Department of Corrections has failed to remedy the “myriad” of problems, Prison Commissioner Kim Thomas said he doesn’t think the DOJ understands the progress that’s been made at the facility.
