BISHOPVILLE, SC (WCIV) — Brian Stirling, director of the South Carolina Department of Corrections, gave journalists a tour of Lee Correctional Institution for the first time since last year’s deadly riots.
In 2018, seven inmates were killed and 22 were injured in what’s been called the worst prison violence in nearly a quarter of a century.
Just one year ago, this prison was the focus of the fight against contraband cell phones after deadly fighting broke out.
For nearly eight hours, officials say a violent battle between inmates ensued, organized by contraband cell phones, fueled by gang alliances.
