BURLINGTON, Vt. — Prominent state leaders weighed in on reforming the state's prison system on Tuesday evening.
The panel discussion was organized by the online news outlet VTDigger, with the theme: 'How to Fix a Jail?" It comes amid allegations brought to light two months ago by a Seven Days investigation into sexual misconduct and assault of inmates by staff members at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility in South Burlington.
"We have also been screaming these types of allegations for decades, in this state, in that facility and in other facilities the women have lived in," said panelist Ashley Messier with the National Council for Incarcerated & Formerly Incarcerated Women & Girls.
