|PA Dept. of Corrections Will Launch Inmate Firefighter Training Pilot Program|

The number of volunteer firefighters in Pennsylvania has been steadily dropping since the 1970s. But a new pilot program is looking to boost that workforce and raise recruitment numbers.
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections is implementing a program that will train eligible inmates to become firefighters. Officials see it as a win-win, giving inmates marketable employment skills while at the same time addressing low firefighter recruitment numbers.
“This is real consistent with what we do, we look at what the market needs are as it relates to work and try to provide that training in prison,” says John Wetzel, Secretary of the PA Dept. of Corrections.
