A Bay County sheriff's jail transport officer has been fired after being charged with raping a female prisoner while taking her from Panama City to Marianna. Floyd Gladney, 44, remained at the Jackson County Jail under a $100,000 bond April 2. He was arrested a day earlier in Panama City and appeared immediately before a judge before being returned to Jackson County. Gladney is charged with sexual battery. He is accused of raping the 34-year-old prisoner March 28 in southern Jackson County. Bay County Sheriff Guy Tunnell said the case is so compelling that he fired Gladney immediately after reviewing evidence obtained by Jackson investigators. Tunnell said he has ordered an internal investigation to find out why Gladney was allowed to transport the inmate alone. Department policy requires that a female officer or at least two male officers be present when transporting a female inmate. Jackson investigators said in a news release that they recovered physical evidence linking Gladney to the alleged crime, but they did not elaborate. Gladney was hired in December 1995 and supervised Bay County's chain gang for seven years until that program ended. He then applied to become a deputy but was unable to pass law enforcement standards and was reassigned as a transport officer, Tunnell said. |
