Killer Who Escaped NM Prison in 2001 Recaptured in Ark.

A convicted killer who escaped a Los Lunas prison more than two years ago has been recaptured in Arkansas.
U.S. Marshals say they arrested 64-year-old Jerry Vernon in Hot Springs, Arkansas around 11:20 a.m. on June 11.
Vernon was convicted for the shooting death of 48-year-old Larry Stevens in 1989. Stevens was abducted from the parking lot of an Albuquerque convenience store and shot twice in the face with a shotgun in the Sandia Mountains east of the city.
In 2001, Vernon was being held in the geriatric unit of the Central New Mexico Correctional Facility in Los Lunas. He had convinced everyone at the prison that his heart condition and diabetes were so bad he was not a flight risk.
Warden Ron Lytle says Vernon loosened bolts on a trailer and escaped on March 29, 2001. A car was waiting for him outside.
Last month, Lytle told KOB-TV that he had postponed his retirement until he was sure Vernon was back behind bars.
Authorities did not immediately release details of how Vernon was captured in Arkansas.
