Article: HOUSTON, Texas (March. 18, 2009). Olivewood Cemetery, Houston’s first Black Cemetery, will be dedicated as a Houston Historical Location on April 4, 2009. Nestled in the historic 1st Ward, within the lower portion of the Historic Heights area of Houston, Texas, Olivewood Cemetery and its long interred residents have recently been restored to a place of prominence in Houston’s History. Olivewood Cemetery was incorporated 10 years after the end of the Civil War in 1875; 10 years and a few months after the Emancipation of Texas Slaves. Its residents include Reverend A.F. Jackson – whose marker reads “Murdered Dallas Texas”, the headstone of a 115 year old woman whose only indication of birth date is the year she “arrived in this country” (1776) and the year she passed (1891), and the writer of “Out of the Ditch”, V.F. Vance – a former slave who’s book of his experience was published and widely read. Stretching from just below I-10 to Hicks Street, Olivewood Cemetery’s visible markers only represent 1/4 of the Cemetery’s 8 acres of beauty. The balance, through years of neglect, remains sorely overgrown and hardly visible at all. Anne Marie Leahey, Southeast Territory Manager for PCS, and her friends have dedicated their Monthly Service weekend of March 28th and 29th to assisting the Organization Descendents of Olivewood with the much needed cleanup of this historic and beautiful cemetery. Volunteers are welcome and needed to assist! Civic Leaders expected to attend include Precinct One Commissioner El Franko Lee, County Judge Ed Emmett, Sheriff Adrian Garcia, Mayor Ed White, Comptroller Anise Parker along side with civic minded citizens who will be working both days at the Cemetery.
