Topic: Juvenile Jam / tattoos on juveniles

I just returned from the American Correctional Association conference in St. Louis. I was on a panel which presented “Gang Tattoo Removal as Preventative Medicine and Re-Entry Tool.” It was clear to all in attendance that removing gang tattoos in a correctional setting can be truly transformative for a person reentering society. As a former warden of several institutions, I understand the value of educational, vocational, and social programs in preparing an offender for employment opportunities. Even with all those resources, an applicant with visible gang or offensive tattoos will have a difficult time in society. Nick Bergman, Director – Quanta Cares of Quanta Lasers, was on our panel. He explained how Quanta is “changing the face” of corrections with laser technology. Tattoo removal may be the missing piece of the reentry puzzle.

Topic: The Club House / COLOR VISION IN CORRECTION ?

I worked within the correctional field for over thirty-five years (retired warden of the most secure prison in the United States) - “Supermax” federal prison in Colorado. Although I have significant color vision issues, I was able to work without problems. The federal prison system was aware of my vision issue and didn’t restrict my employment. My interest in the FBI was impacted by the color vision issue.

I wish you the best with your career. If policy does not allow hiring because of your vision issues, then move on to another criminal justice agency that permits such a minor medical issue.

Topic: The Club House / New BOP hire

Congrats on your recent acceptance to the Federal Bureau of Prisons (FBOP). Soon you will discover how exceptional FBOP is - staff are professional and the work environment is overall safe and secure. I would recommend continuing your academic education in criminal justice, management, or training for a career with the Bureau.

I retired from the FBOP after 34 years in local, state, and federal correctional experience. As former warden of the United States Penitentiary “Supermax” in Florence, Colorado, I strongly support your career in one of the most honorable professions.
